Most of Greensboro's sewer lines went in before the 1950s, by the city's own account. The private line from an older house to the street is usually just as old. Clay joints open, cast iron rots through, and roots find both.

If sewage is backing up now, stop using water and call.
Diagnostic Indicators

Clogged or broken? Signs the sewer line has failed

One backup does not mean a failed line. These signs do.

What you notice What it points to
The line backs up again weeks or months after it was cleaned A defect that keeps catching waste
Roots, mud or gravel come back on the cleaning cable The pipe is open to the soil
A sewage smell in the yard or crawl space Waste is escaping the pipe
A soggy strip, or grass greener than the rest, along the line A leak feeding the ground
A dip in the lawn or a driveway slab settling over the line Soil washing into a broken pipe
Smoke rising from your lawn during a city sewer smoke test A break or open joint in your line

The city smoke-tests and camera-inspects its sewers to find defects. A camera in your own line does the same job and settles the question.

Immediate Action & Procedure

Emergency sewer line repair

It is an emergency when sewage is in the house, or when no toilet or drain can be used.

Licensed Sewer Lateral Diagnostics

Rapid camera localization and trenchless spot excavation throughout Greensboro.

Before we arrive

  1. 1 Stop using water anywhere in the house.
  2. 2 Loosen the cap on the outside cleanout if sewage is rising indoors, so it spills in the yard instead.
  3. 3 Call Water Resources dispatch at 336-373-2033 as well. The city checks whether its main is the cause.

What we do on an emergency call

  1. 1 Get the house draining. If anything will pass, the line is opened with a cable or water jet.
  2. 2 Put a camera through it. This shows whether the pipe is blocked, broken or collapsed, and exactly where.
  3. 3 Give you the choice. If the pipe is passing water, the repair can be planned and priced without a rush.
  4. 4 Dig the same day only when the pipe has collapsed and nothing will pass. Buried utilities are marked first through an emergency locate request.
Permit & Inspection Note: A permanent repair still needs a city permit. After an emergency dig, it is filed on the next business day and the trench stays open for the inspector.
Infrastructure Analysis

Why sewer lines fail in Greensboro

The city maintains about 1,400 miles of sewer and has rehabilitated more than 130 miles of it since 1995, at roughly one percent a year. Nobody does that for the private line in your yard. It has been in the ground as long as the house.

Pipe Where it is found How it fails
Clay tile Houses built before about 1960. Census figures put one Greensboro home in five in that group. Joints open and let roots in. Sections shift, crack and drop.
Cast iron Under the house and the first few feet outside, in homes into the 1970s Rusts from the inside until the bottom of the pipe is gone
Orangeburg Some postwar houses. It is a tar-and-wood-fiber pipe sold nationally into the early 1970s. Softens, blisters and flattens. It cannot be cleaned hard or relied on.
PVC Houses from the 1970s on The pipe lasts. Poor bedding lets it sag, and joints can pull apart.

What works on the pipe

  • Tree roots They follow moisture to a leaking joint, grow inside and pry it wider.
  • Piedmont clay It swells wet and shrinks dry. Pipe bedded in it settles into low spots that hold waste.
  • Weight & Traffic A shallow line under a driveway takes every vehicle that parks on it.
  • Settling fill On newer lots the trench soil compacts over the first years and the pipe sags with it.
Diagnostic Precision

Finding the damage before anyone digs

A sewer line repair is priced from a camera inspection, not from a guess.

  1. 1
The line is cleared enough to see. A camera cannot see through standing sewage.
  2. 2
A camera goes in from the cleanout, or through a pulled toilet where there is no cleanout.
  3. 3
Each defect is measured. The footage counter gives its distance from the entry point.
  4. 4
The spot is located from above. A transmitter in the camera head lets the position and depth be marked on the ground.

What you should be given

  • The video itself.
  • The pipe material, and where it changes.
  • The distance and depth of each defect.
  • Whether the damage is on your side of the cleanout near the street, or past it.
Keep the video. It lets you compare quotes for the same job, and Water Resources will want to see it if the damage is on the city's side.

Buying an older house?

A standard home inspection does not look inside the sewer line. On a house with clay or cast iron pipe, have it scoped before you close.

Engineering Solutions

Sewer line repair options

There are five ways to repair a sewer line. The camera decides which ones are possible for yours.

Method How it works Fits when Does not fit when
Spot repair Targeted The ground is opened at the defect and a short section is replaced in PVC One break or dropped joint in pipe that is otherwise sound Defects run the length of the line
Open-trench replacement Full Line A trench follows the line and new PVC is laid to the correct slope The line sags, has collapsed, or was never graded properly A driveway, a large tree or a deck sits on top of it
Pipe bursting Trenchless A head pulled through the old pipe breaks it outward and draws new pipe in behind it. It needs a pit at each end. The whole line must go but the surface is worth saving The line sags, since the new pipe follows the old path, or a collapse blocks the cable
Pipe lining CIPP Resin A resin-soaked liner is set inside the old pipe and cured hard, forming a new pipe within it The pipe is cracked or root-damaged but still round The pipe has sagged, flattened or collapsed
Sectional liner Point Repair A short liner bridges one defect A single bad joint under a driveway or tree There are several defects

Trenchless is a way to save the surface, not a better pipe

Lining and bursting spare the lawn, the driveway and the trees. They do not correct a sag, and they cannot pass a collapse. If a line has a belly, the only fix is to dig and regrade it.

These are not experimental methods here. The city lists bursting, sliplining, cured-in-place lining and dig-and-replace as the four ways it rehabilitates its own sewers.

What is usually added during a repair

  • ✓ A cleanout, where the line has none. North Carolina's plumbing code calls for one where the house drain meets the sewer line, and at least every 100 feet.
  • ✓ A backwater valve, where the code requires it. That is when fixtures sit lower than the next manhole upstream.
Project Steps & Permitting

How a sewer line repair goes in Greensboro

1
Camera and quote

You get the method, the length, the depth and a written price.

2
Permit

Replacing a sewer line needs a plumbing permit from the city's Engineering & Inspections department. We file it.

3
Utility marking

NC 811 is contacted three working days before a planned dig. It marks utility-owned lines only. Sprinkler pipe, yard lighting and anything else you own are not marked, so tell us where they run.

4
The repair

The line is dug, burst or lined, and the house is without drains only while the pipe is open.

5
City inspection

The inspector sees the new pipe before it is covered. Inspections are requested through the city's phone system by 8 p.m. for the next business day, so a trench often stays open overnight.

6
Backfill and a final camera pass

The soil goes back in compacted layers, and the finished line is recorded.

Duration: How long it takes depends on depth, length and what sits above the line. The quote states it.

Ownership Boundaries

Your line or the city's main?

The city's water and wastewater rules draw the line at one fitting. The public sewer ends at the sewer cleanout set near the public right-of-way or easement line. On the house side of it, the owner must keep the line in good repair.

Part of the system Whose it is Who to call
Drains inside the house Yours A plumber
The sewer line across your yard Yours A plumber
The cleanout near the right-of-way line The end of the public sewer Water Resources, 336-373-2033
The connection under the street and the main The city's Water Resources, 336-373-2033

If your house has no cleanout at the street

Some older houses do not. The city's guidance to plumbers is that when no cleanout can be found, the owner hires a plumber to clear the line all the way to the main.

A camera inspection then shows how far out the damage is. If it is past your property line, send the video to Water Resources before you pay anyone to dig in the street.

If the city's main caused the backup

Under the Sanitary Sewer Backup Policy, in force since February 1, 2021, the city may reimburse damage from a first backup caused by a blockage in its main.

Report the backup to Water Resources dispatch right away at 336-373-2033 so the city can inspect its main line promptly.

Pricing Transparency

What affects the cost, and how people pay for it

You get a written price before any digging. Six things set it.

Length

A four-foot spot repair and a sixty-foot replacement are completely different jobs.

Depth

A deep line means a wider, shored trench, safety barriers and more soil to move.

What is on top

Lawn is cheap to cross. Driveways, walks, decks and mature trees add complexity.

Method

Each of the five repair options requires its own specialized equipment and labor.

Condition of old pipe

Structural roundness decides whether trenchless lining or bursting is possible at all.

Code extras & permit

Required cleanouts, backwater valves, and the City of Greensboro plumbing permit.

Our rate is the same at night, on weekends and on holidays. No after-hours surcharges.

Ways the bill gets paid

Homeowners Insurance

The North Carolina Department of Insurance states that the standard homeowners policy does not cover water damage from a sewer backup, and that many companies sell that cover as an added endorsement. Ask your agent about it, and about service line coverage for the buried pipe itself.

The City of Greensboro

If its main was at fault, see the Sanitary Sewer Backup Policy above. The city may reimburse damages resulting from blockages within the municipal sewer main.

A Service Line Plan

The city has partnered with a company, SLWA, that sells optional plans covering a homeowner's outside water and sewer lines. A plan only helps if it was in place before the failure. We have no tie to it.

Home Repair GSO

The city's grant program for income-eligible owner-occupants has offered up to $20,000 for repairs that include plumbing. Applications are not always open. The program's number is 336-373-2530.

Long-Term Care

After the repair

Protecting your newly repaired sewer line and preserving documentation for your home.

Keep the paperwork

The permit record and the final video are worth having when you sell.

Know your cleanouts

Know where the cleanouts are and keep them uncovered and accessible.

Re-check remaining old pipe

If only part of the line was replaced, the rest is still the age it was.

Plant trees away

Do not plant trees or deep-root shrubs directly over the sewer line.

Service backwater valve

The city recommends cleaning and servicing it at least once a year.

Avoid heavy traffic

Keep heavy vehicles, equipment and dumpsters off a shallow sewer line.

Clear Answers & Local Guidance

Sewer line repair in Greensboro: common questions

Straightforward information about trenchless options, city permits, street lateral boundaries, and insurance coverage.

Can a sewer line be repaired without digging up the yard?

Often. Lining and pipe bursting need only one or two small pits. They work when the old pipe still holds its shape and its slope. A sagging or collapsed line has to be dug.

Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line in Greensboro?

Yes. It is a plumbing permit from the city's Engineering & Inspections department, and the new pipe is inspected before it is covered.

Who is responsible for the sewer line under the street?

The city's rules say the public sewer ends at the cleanout near the right-of-way line. Past that point it is the city's. Call Water Resources at 336-373-2033 before paying for any work in the street.

Is a lined pipe as good as a new one?

For a cracked or root-damaged pipe that is still round and properly sloped, lining gives a sealed, jointless pipe. It does not fix a sag, and it makes the pipe slightly narrower.

Will roots come back after the repair?

Not into new PVC or a liner, which have no open joints. They can still enter any old pipe that was left in place.

Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line repair?

Usually not under a standard policy. The state Department of Insurance says sewer backup damage is not covered unless you bought an endorsement. Ask your agent what you have.

Do you handle emergency sewer line repair at night?

Yes. We answer at any hour, at the same rate. The first job is to get the house draining, and digging follows only if the pipe has collapsed.

How do I know the repair was done right?

It passed the city inspection, and you were shown a camera recording of the finished line.
